How to add automatic subtitles to a video
Turn speech into captions on your own computer, fix the doubtful words and add karaoke-style subtitles. Free, with no time limit and no watermark.
Subtitles make a video understandable where it’s watched without sound. Typing them by hand takes hours; Weditra turns the speech into text for you. It happens on your computer: audio and video are never sent anywhere. Turkish and English are supported.
Step by step
- Put the video with speech on the timeline and select the clip.
- In the Captions panel, open the Auto captions page.
- Choose the Language: Turkish or English, or Detect automatically if you’re not sure.
- Press Create captions from speech. The audio is prepared, the speech is recognised and the captions are built. You can cancel with Stop.
- When it finishes, it shows how many captions were made and how many words were recognised.
The first time, the speech recognition model (Whisper) has to be downloaded. Weditra asks for your consent first; it downloads once and then works without a connection.
Advanced settings
Open Advanced for:
- Source: Selected clip, Whole video or In–out range. With music in the mix, pick the clip to caption only the speech.
- Model: Fast is quicker and a little less accurate; Most accurate is better and slower.
- Line length, Lines, Longest duration: how caption lines are broken up. Short lines read well in short videos.
- Also write “um, uh”: turn this on if you want filler words captioned (for example to cut them). Off, recognition usually leaves them out.
- Delete existing captions: stops old captions piling up when you create them again.
Fix the doubtful words
Automatic captions are never certain, and names and foreign words are where they slip. Weditra marks the words it isn’t sure about. Click a marked word in the list on the Add captions page to select it; the mark goes away once you correct it, and Next jumps to the next doubtful one. Clicking a line takes you to that moment, where you can edit the text, split the caption or delete it.
Make them look good
- On the Templates page of the Captions panel, choose a style.
- For karaoke-style word highlighting, turn on Karaoke on the Add captions page and try Colour, Box, Pop, Fill, Dim or Three colours.
- Apply style to all captions gives them all the same look.
- To change the position, tell Wedi “put the captions at the top”, “at the bottom” or “centre them”.
If you already have an SRT or VTT file, Import caption file on the Add captions page brings it in, and each line becomes an editable text layer.
Export
Captions are part of the video: when you press Export, they’re written into it just as they looked in the preview. Nothing is watermarked. More on the Subtitles feature page.
Tips
- Clean audio improves accuracy more than anything else. See the audio cleanup guide first.
- On a long video, try a short section first, then apply your settings to the whole thing.
- Play the captions through once before you publish.
