How to stabilize a shaky video
Steady handheld footage with one-click Fix shake, the Enhance the picture section or the steady-camera preset. Limits and shooting tips included.
Handheld video shakes, especially when you walk or zoom. You can smooth it afterwards: the program measures how the camera moved and corrects it the opposite way. There is a cost: to avoid empty borders while correcting, the picture is zoomed in slightly. The more shake there is, the more zoom it takes.
Way 1: One-click Fix shake
- Select the shaky clip on the timeline.
- In the right panel’s Video tab, under Quick fix, press Fix shake.
- A corrected copy is made in the background, and the preview plays it once it’s ready. Camera movement is measured and corrected in two passes: the video is analysed first, then the fix is applied.
- Play the clip in the preview; undo if you don’t like it.
The preview and the export use the same copy, so what you see is what you get.
Way 2: Settings in Enhance the picture
- Select the clip and open the Video tab.
- In Enhance the picture, find Stabilize and switch on Steady the shake (stabilise).
- The Stabilisation and Borders options let you choose how the correction is applied; what happens at the borders affects how much it zooms.
- The same section also holds Reduce noise and flicker correction. Interlacing and flicker are detected and fixed automatically, and no AI is used.
Everything runs on one copy in a fixed order: deinterlacing, stabilising, flicker, noise, banding.
Way 3: Keep the frame locked with camera follow
If someone speaking or an object needs to stay steady in frame, open Camera follow in Smart tools and pick the preset Steady camera (no shake). While the subject barely moves the camera stays completely still, and only drifts smoothly when it has to. It reduces framing shake and also helps when turning landscape video vertical. Details on the Smart crop page.
What to expect
- Light and moderate shake smooths out very well. With violent shake or frames blurred by motion the result is limited; stabilising doesn’t remove blur.
- The picture zooms in a little. If you shot in 4K and export 1080p, you’ll hardly notice.
- On fast-moving scenes or a very long file the job takes a while; you can follow progress from Wedi.
Shooting precautions
- Hold with both hands and tuck your elbows into your body.
- When walking, bend your knees slightly and soften your steps.
- Leaning on something fixed such as a table or wall, or using a tripod, is the most reliable stabiliser at the shoot.
- If your phone’s own stabilisation was on, you may not need to stabilise again on the computer.
What next?
After stabilising, fix colour and sound too: see the colour correction and audio cleanup guides. More is on the Pro tools page.
FAQ
Is the original file changed? No. A corrected copy is made and your original video stays as it was.
Why does the picture zoom in a little? Correcting shifts the picture, which can leave empty borders; the frame is enlarged slightly to cover them.
Is the video uploaded anywhere? No. The whole job runs on your computer.
