How to trim and split a video, step by step

Trim the start and end of a video, split it in the middle, delete the parts you don't want, or save a section without opening a project.

Cutting is the first job in almost every edit: the waiting at the start, the “okay, stopping now” at the end, or a take that went wrong in the middle. You don’t need anything complicated for it. Here are the ways to trim, split and delete in Weditra.

One thing to keep straight: trimming shortens how long the video runs, while the Crop section of the Video tab cuts the edges of the picture. This guide is about length.

Trim the start and end

  1. Drag your video into the media area (or import it), then add it to the timeline.
  2. Hover over the left or right edge of the clip until the cursor changes, then drag the edge inward.
  3. Check the preview. Trimmed footage isn’t deleted, only hidden, so you can drag the edge back out at any time.
  4. If the clip is linked to a sound or a caption, dragging an edge trims them together. Hold Alt while dragging to trim only this clip.

Split a video in the middle

  1. Move the playhead (the red line) to the exact moment you want to cut.
  2. With the clip selected, press S or use Split at playhead.
  3. The clip becomes two. Each piece can now be moved, deleted or edited on its own.

Delete a part you don’t want

  1. Split at the start and the end of the bad take so it becomes its own clip.
  2. Select it and press Delete. This leaves a gap.
  3. For no gap, use Shift+Delete: the clips after it slide over and close the space.
  4. Made a mistake? Ctrl+Z undoes it and Ctrl+Shift+Z redoes it. Undo is unlimited.

In and out points

If you only want a section of a long timeline, press I to set an in point and O for an out point. Export then writes only that range. It’s the quickest way to pull a short piece out of a long video.

Save a section without a project

If you have a single file and only want part of it, open Cut audio & video from Smart tools. Drag on the waveform to select a section, add more selections if you like, then save them separately or remove the unwanted parts and join what’s left. No project is needed and your original file is never changed.

There’s a Fast (no re-encoding) option: there’s no quality loss and it takes seconds, but cuts can shift by a few frames, so they’re approximate. Turn it off when you need frame-accurate cuts.

A faster way for talking videos

If you’re cutting someone speaking, you don’t have to hunt for every pause. Cut silences and Split at scenes in Smart tools suggest the cuts, show you a preview, and let you undo anything you dislike. See the Auto-cut page for details.

Tips

  • Cut just before the breath, not right after the last word; speech then flows naturally.
  • When you have many cuts to make, work from the end toward the start so the later clips don’t shift under you.
  • Everything runs on your computer. Your video isn’t uploaded anywhere.

FAQ

Is the trimmed footage deleted? No. Dragging a clip edge never touches the original file, and pulling the edge back brings the picture back.

Does splitting leave a gap? No. A gap only appears when you delete a piece with Delete; Shift+Delete closes it.

Will my captions move when I cut? Captions created from speech move with the cut.

Weditra is free and puts no watermark on anything you export. The Windows version is in the works; once the download opens it will be on the Download page.
